Why We Walk
We walk for people. For patients and their loved ones. For colleagues and neighbors. For everyone affected by lung disease. We walk because together we can defeat lung cancer and lung disease one step at a time.
What is a LUNG FORCE Hero?
LUNG FORCE Heroes are patients, caregivers, family, friends and co-workers of those who are impacted by lung cancer. Our Heroes share their powerful journeys — stories which help raise awareness and the research funding needed to defeat lung cancer for once and for all. Heroes may also be asked to speak at a LUNG FORCE Walk Kick-off event, LUNG FORCE Advocacy Day, Corporate Recruitment event and/or on Walk day.
If you're interested in becoming a LUNG FORCE Hero, please contact Kaelyn Gates for more information. We also invite you to Share Your Voice and read about other Heroes' experiences too. Everyone's story is unique, and we appreciate you getting involved and becoming a LUNG FORCE Hero!

LUNG FORCE Hero April D.
April walks in honor of her sister, Kimberley Clark. Kimberley passed away in 2020 after a long battle with lung cancer. Kim, in addition to a solid career in banking, was also a Reiki Master and Certified Life Coach receiving accreditation as an Expert Rating Certified Professional. She founded Transformational Coaching and Living in 2017 as a path to be a life coach and share her journey as a warrior of fighting cancer and to empower others to find hope and clarity in the face of adversity. Kimberley will forever be missed for her contagious laugh and beautiful smile. She empowered many with her inspirational stories and ability to discover hidden potential.
April joined LUNG FORCE in 2020 as team captain of A Warrior’s Legacy, and quickly became our top fundraiser. April has shared her family’s story and represented New York State with the American Lung Association during our LUNG FORCE Advocacy Day. She has consistently advocated for lung cancer screening support and additional funding for research around treatment. April has met with Senator Chuck Schumer and other officials to help make a difference and build our FORCE, raised funds and participated in both of our local fundraising events (Fight For Air Climb Buffalo and LUNG FORCE Walk Buffalo), and has encouraged her company and those in the Corning / Elmira area to get involved in LUNG FORCE; all in honor of her sister, Kimberley.
LUNG FORCE Hero Kristine K.
I walk for my mother-in-law, Kris Koenig. I found the LUNG FORCE Walk while searching for a way to channel my fear into something productive when we found out my mother-in-law was diagnosed with lung cancer. Kris was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2018 and after a courageous battle, passed away on April 18th, 2020. It’s been such an honor to go from fundraiser to co-chair of the walk committee and watch firsthand how amazing people like all of you have raised the money that funds the research that is saving lives every day. It is incredible what has been accomplished in this space in the even only past few years and funding and awareness are so important for that momentum to continue.
