On Thursday, January 28, 2021 the American Lung Association hosted the second session of the Tri-State Education and Engagement Series, “Is it COVID-19, Asthma or the Flu?”.

Our panel discussed the impact lung diseases have on our community and addressed health inequities and barriers to accessing healthcare.

Meet Our Panelists:

Samuel Acquah, M.D.
Pulmonary Medicine | The Mount Sinai Hospital
Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine

Dr. Acquah is the Director of the Medical Critical Care Unit for The Mount Sinai Hospital. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine and Neocritical Care. He has over 25 years of experience treating a multitude of pulmonary diseases including COPD, asthma, sarcoidosis, interstitial lung disease and lung cancer. He currently practices critical care and specializes in treating critically ill patients with severe sepsis, shock and advanced respiratory failure. He is a 2015, 2016 and 2017 New York Magazine Top Doctors nominee and has received many teaching awards and is a member of numerous professional organizations including the American College of Chest Physicians, American Thoracic Society and Society of Critical Care Medicine.

His research interest is in quality improvement, critical care ultrasonography and the application of new technology in critical care. he has published a number of peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and is an invited lecturer at national meetings.


Mangala Narasimhan, D.O., F.C.C.P., F.A.S.M., F.A.C.P.
Senior Vice President and Director, Critical Care Services | Northwell Health

As director of Critical Care Services, Dr. Narasimhan works with all of Northwell Health’s clinical, operation and critical care leadership to help drive greater consistency and standardization across the health system. She is an attending physician for the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and medical director of Northwell’s Acute Lung Injury Center/VV ECMO program. She is also a professor of medicine at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. She is a recognized leader who is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine and sleep medicine. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she cared for the most severely ill patients at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore Hospital, sites that experienced significant patient surge. This past March, Dr. Narasimhan was featured on 60 Minutes, discussing the impact of COVID-19.


Steven A. Thau, M.D.
Pulmonary Disease, Critical Care Medicine, Sleep Medicine | Phelps Hospital Northwell Health

Dr. Steven A. Thau, MD is an established and highly skilled physician with over 26 years of experience in Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. He obtained his medical degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed residency at Hospital University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA and completed his fellowship at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. In addition to his Pulmonary Medicine Practice in Sleep Hollow, NY, Dr. Thau serves as the Division Chief of the Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine Department, the Medical Director of the Sleep Center, Respiratory Therapy and the PFT lab, and is a member of the Quality and Standards Committee, Executive Committee and ICU Committee at Phelps Hospital Northwell Health. Dr. Thau is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American Academy of Sleep Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is board-certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), ABIM- Pulmonary Medicine, ABIM- Critical Care Medicine, American Board of Sleep Medicine, ABIM- Sleep Medicine and ABIM- Hospice and Palliative Care. He currently resides in Stamford, CT with his wife and their four children.

 

Meet Our Moderator:

David Hill, M.D.
Board Director
Director of Clinical Research | Waterbury Pulmonary Associates

Dr. Hill is a member of the Lung Association's National Board of Directors and is the immediate past chair of the Northeast Regional Board of the American Lung Association. He serves on the Leadership Board of the American Lung Association in Connecticut and is a former chair of that board. He is a practicing pulmonary and critical care physician with Waterbury Pulmonary Associates and serves as their director of clinical research. He is an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine, an assistant clinical professor at the Frank Netter School of Medicine at Quinnipiac University, and a clinical instructor at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. He has been the principal investigator for more than 75 pulmonary research trials and the author of many published papers.
