The American Lung Association is the oldest voluntary health agency in the nation. We began a century ago working for cures for tuberculosis. Today we are dedicated to preventing and curing lung disease and promoting lung health through research, advocacy and statewide services for those with asthma and other lung disease. The American Lung Association has been in Hawaii since 1934.

More than 30 million Americans suffer from chronic lung disease. Asthma alone affects more children than any other chronic disease. Every day in this country, 11 people die from severe asthma attacks. Few know that lung cancer is the most common cancer related death; taking more lives than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined. But we don't just help people with lung disease. The American Lung Association helps everyone who breathes.

Your financial contribution supports research, program development, and public policy surrounding lung health. It also includes sharing up-to-date information on respiratory illnesses, their treatment and management, including the COVID-19 Action Initiative.

The COVID-19 Action Initiative will be used to expand the Lung Association’s ongoing respiratory research program, enhance key public health measures, and establish an advanced network to stop future respiratory virus pandemics. The initiative will also work with public and private entities to increase research collaboration and develop new vaccines, detection tests and treatment therapies. A cornerstone of the initiative will be leveraging our existing research network and funding respiratory virus research. The Initiative will also allocate funds to education and advocacy to support public health measures against current and future threats of COVID-19 and respiratory viruses.

Yes, 100% the funds raised in Hawaii go towards helping people in Hawaii.

The color turquoise and the “whoosh of breath” icon both are reminiscent of air, breathing and healthy lungs. It also symbolizes the “force” that it will take to change the statistics about lung health. This particular color of blue—turquoise—is also a color often used by other lung health organizations. And because we want to build a movement, we wanted to choose a color that would work well for the whole community.

No, we will continue our work to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease across all threats to lung health, from defeating lung cancer, ending the youth vaping epidemic, improving the lives of patients with lung disease and championing clean air for all
