COPD, COVID-19, and Nicotine Use: Know the Risks | Online, Live Webinar

COPD, COVID-19, and Nicotine Use: Know the Risks

The American Lung Association in partnership with the Arkansas Department of Health will hold a 60-minute educational session for health professionals on the latest statistics and treatment options for tobacco use/vaping including how it relates to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and COVID-19 on June 29, 2020.

As the world combats the coronavirus (COVID-19), it has never been more important to keep our lungs healthy. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), smokers are likely to be more vulnerable to COVID-19 as the act of smoking means that fingers (and possibly contaminated cigarettes) are in contact with lips, which increases the possibility of transmission of the virus from hand to mouth. Smokers may also already have lung disease or reduced lung capacity, which would greatly increase the risk of serious illness.

The COPD, COVID-19 and Nicotine Use: Know the Risk webinar will address Arkansas specific smoking and vaping rates. In addition to reviewing the latest vaping devices, trends, and targeted population. The webinar will cover the most recent concerns regarding COVID-19 among smokers/vaping and especially individuals with compromised lung function or COPD.

This webinar will educate respiratory therapists, pulmonary nurses, and other healthcare professionals who treat COPD in the community setting. Clinicians will have a better understating of the cessation services offered by the Arkansas Department of Health.

Also, webinar participants will have the opportunity to receive further cessation training. They can earn continuing education credits by registering for the American Lung Association’s Ask, Advise, Refer To Quit Not Switch on-demand 60-minute online training module geared towards Healthcare Professionals.
