By engaging with the ONE Step training, you are helping to make a positive impact on the lung health of children in our communities. As a ONE Step trained individual, you will be able to provide resources on asthma, secondhand smoke exposure reduction and health impacts, and electronic smoking device aerosol to those you serve.
Program Outline
This program consists of a two-hour training and an on-the-job application.
Two-Hour Training: The two-hour ONE Step online virtual training prepares Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) and organizations serving low-income parents/caregivers to have health-focused conversations with parents about:
- Secondhand smoke (SHS) and electronic smoking devices
- The health impact of exposure to SHS on children
- Steps to take to reduce children’s exposure to SHS
- Local and statewide tobacco cessation resources and support
- Basic information about asthma and how to manage it and resources
On-the-Job Application: After completing the virtual training, participants identify at least three ways they will share the resources and engage parents in the conversation around elimination of secondhand smoke/secondhand aerosol. Participants are fully supported by American Lung Association staff through access to free resources and subject matter experts, including but not limited to:
- Children’s story books
- Children’s coloring workbooks and crayons
- Brochures and flyers for parent education table
- Classroom activities discussing the impacts of secondhand smoke/secondhand aerosol
- Fun incentives like kid masks, adult masks, and more
- Smoke/vapefree signage for indoor and outdoor areas
- Support implementing training or additional tailored training for staff and patrons done in partnership with the American Lung Association and participating organization
- Certificate of Completion
- Gift card for online training and activity tracker completion
- Colorado Shines Professional Development Information System (PDIS) hours three in total
**Participants must complete the On-the-Job Application to receive Certificate of Completion, gift card, and Colorado Shines PDIS credits.
What is the ONE Step Program?
The American Lung Association’s (ALA) ONE Step program provides Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) and organizations serving low-income parents with training and resources on asthma, secondhand smoke (SHS), and electronic smoking devices (ESDs).
There are two components to this program: two-hour virtual training and on-the-job application.
The two-hour virtual training uses health-focused messaging about removing SHS (tobacco and marijuana smoke), asthma triggers, and removing environmental tobacco (including e-cigarettes) from homes and places children go. Folks who complete this 2-hour virtual training, will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to connect with parents/caregivers about the dangers of SHS and how protecting child’s health starts with one simple step.
Additionally, there is an on-the-job implementation component, where participants share information from the ONE Step training with those they work with. The participant determines the best way for information and resource sharing and the ALA staff will help support their activity through incentives and educational materials.
How do I sign up for the virtual training?
You can register for the virtual training by finding training dates and time on the program website, ONE Step Colorado and scrolling down to “Upcoming ONE Step Events.” Trainings can also be scheduled for a team at a date and time that work best for their schedule.

Is this course eligible for continuing education credits?
Currently, participants who complete the ONE Step training and the on-the-job application, earn Professional Development credits from Colorado Shines PDIS. We can also work with your local licensing agency to see if continuing education credits can be offered.
How much does this training cost?
This program is grant-funded. All costs associated with the training are covered, such as facilitator time, training materials, and participant resources.
Is this training offered in-person?
At this time, the ONE Step training is not offered in-person due to observing COVID-19 safety recommendations by the CDC. However, we can schedule virtual trainings for your organization at any time.
