Thank you, Clean Air Challenge 2019 Trekkers!

You rose to the challenge and beat all expectations to raise funds for clean air and healthy lungs. Together we raised $330,000! We are very grateful for you and your hard work. This year’s trek truly was a challenge, one of our top five worst weather years for Clean Air Challenge in 35 years. The rain and the cold was about as Alaskan as it gets and yet so were you, rising to meet it with smiles on your faces. The fact that you were out there, on your bikes in the wet weather with numb fingers and toes is a testament to your resilience.

We know many of you realized that you’d reached your limit; perhaps your bike couldn’t deal with any more road grit, or you were just plain freezing or exhausted. Choosing to get on that bike in the first place, by pedaling 25, 50, 75 miles before you realized the smart call was to load up and finish by vehicle is as much of a success as finishing on your bike. The Clean Air Challenge is first and foremost a personal commitment to raising funds for the American Lung Association. The challenge of the ride that follows is your chance to get out there and try something that might well be beyond anything you’ve attempted before. And you all did! Congratulations and thank you to you all!

Those of us who are affected by lung disease face the challenge of simply breathing [freely], every day. And many of us have days where it seems impossible to catch our breath because even with treatment and planning and continuous care, our environment just isn’t compatible. We know that there’s a good chance we might have to pack it in and seek help from our doctor or the emergency room, and yet we get out of bed and go on with our day. It was touching to see so many of you doing the same thing with us; for us.

Thank you for your show of solidarity by riding on a cold, wet day in May, no matter how far you went. You have our appreciation and admiration.

John Mohar has begun posting photos from the event on his website, Photography. Keep checking back as he is sharing them as he edits them, and wow, are they fantastic! Your participant pages are still open on the website. If you filled out a personal guarantee, you have through Friday, May 31 to continue to fundraise. Thank you again for all the work it takes to raise funds!

Many thanks go to the sponsors, partners, and volunteers of this year’s event and we can’t host the ride without them. We are thankful to our presenting sponsor, Matson Alaska, for their leadership donation, for the many volunteers on the route and at the lodge, and the plethora of swag donated for challenge prizes, door prizes, and incentives. Their dedication, dependability, and commitment to excellence were evident in all aspects of their event involvement. Thank you, Matson.

Great appreciation goes to Dr. John Yordy and Magdalena Acevedo de Yordy, Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, BP Alaska, ConocoPhillips Alaska, Doyon Limited, FedEx Express, Mat-Su Health Foundation, Providence Health & Services Alaska, Foundation Health Partners, Mt. McKinley Bank, Credit Union 1 and Stantec for their financial support this year.

The keys to our success along with your comfort and enjoyment this year were due to contributions from Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, KTUU Channel 2, Alaska Airlines, Alaska Railroad Corporation, Denali Brewing Company, iHeart Media, Photography, Marco T’s Pizzeria, Run Wild Fitness, The Bicycle Shop, and /vib/cycle. We are grateful for their partnership!

With many, many thanks to our hard-working volunteers and the donations from the following, the route and rest stops were well covered: Alaska’s Best Water, Anchorage Nordic Ski Patrol, Bike Anchorage, Carlile Transporation Systems, Carrs Safeway, Charlie’s Produce, Credit Union 1, Gold Wingers of Wasilla, Great Harvest Bread Company, Indian Valley Meats, Mr. Prime Beef, and the Odom Corporation.

Thank you again for a fantastic event, and we hope you will join us in 2020. Until then, ride safe, have fun, and breathe easy!
