Philadelphia Fire Department
The mission of the American Lung Association hits close to home with firefighters because of our increased susceptibility to lung disease, including lung cancer due to exposure of gases, chemicals and smoke in the line of duty. Respiratory diseases remain a significant health issue for firefighters and emergency responders. And we are at a higher risk of developing chronic issues, including lingering cough, hoarseness, asthma and allergies and in more extreme cases, lung or bronchial cancer diagnosis.
Many of you have participated in the Climb as part of the Cadet Classes 195, 197, 198, 199 and 200 teams. Now as a member of a Firehouse, you understand even more the daily risks firefighters face while putting your lives on the line and being exposed to the possibility of lung disease.
In 2017, Battalion Chief John Narkin, B.01/C was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, and since then, our brothers and sisters come together in solidarity for him.
This year, it is our hope that every firehouse in Philadelphia and surrounding counties show their support for Chief Narkin and their fellow firefighters with lung disease. Please register or donate to support the Philadelphia Fire Department in the 2024 Fight For Air Climb.
