Dear Family and Friends,
As many of you know we are approaching the one year anniversary of my Daddy's passing 9/24/18
He left us very suddenly and unexpectedly :(
My Dad passed away from a lung disease called Pulmonary fibrosis.
What is Pulmonary Fibrosis?
Pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease that occurs when lung tissue becomes damaged and scarred. The scar tissue makes it more difficult for your lungs to work properly. As pulmonary fibrosis worsens, you become progressively more short of breath.
Pulmonary fibrosis is caused when the tissue around and between the air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs thicken and "scar" This makes it more difficult for oxygen to pass into your bloodstream. This damage can be caused by: Occupational exposure to toxins, certain medical conditions, radiation therapy, and some medications.
The lung damage caused by pulmonary fibrosis can't be repaired, there is no cure :( Medication and therapies can sometimes help ease symptoms and prolong life. For some people, a lung transplant might be appropriate if it's caught early enough.)
Unfortunately Dad did not have that chance :(
Dads symptoms started in February 2018. Cold symptoms mainly a cough. After about two months he went in and was treated for a cold/flu,put on antibiotics and steroids. In June he had an x-ray and the scar tissue was spotted. Other tests were ran but It wasn't until mid-September when he had a biopsy to confirm it was pulmonary fibrosis and he passed just a few days later
My Dad never smoked a cigarette in his life. In fact I believe he still holds the state record at Nicolet high school for the fastest 800 m dash in track. ( My grandma said that watching him run at his track meets was like watching a gazelle run. Tall, lean, tan, blonde, muscular and graceful....She said he was so natural. He barely had to put effort in to it. Such a beautiful memory she has painted)
My Dad Loved being outdoors.
In his early days my Dad would love to go for runs and ski the slopes of California and Wisconsin. He loved walking with my mom and his big chocolate lab Max. He enjoyed duck hunting with his best friend Mark. He cherished Fishing and Deer hunting with his son-in-law's and grandchildren. He loved to go for bike rides and to camp/hike the bluffs at Devils Lake with his wife and daughters. He loved to BREATHE in that crisp fresh air.
On Sept. 29th my Mom, my sisters, myself, along with our families and my Dads close friends will participate in a walk with LUNG FORCE ( Part of the American lung Association) at the Milwaukee County zoo. Team Name: Team Kurt/Kurt's Girls I know my dad will be smiling down at all of us. Not only did he love the outdoors but he also had a HUGE giving heart This event is something Dad would have loved to be a part of with "His Girls"
Please consider supporting us by making a donation to my LUNG FORCE Walk.
The Walk represents so much to me and my family- it will help us make a difference in the lives of those affected by lung disease and lung cancer. The funds raised will help provide patient education and support important research, as well as advocacy efforts.
Every donation I receive helps ensure a bigger impact will be made. Please consider a donation today.
You can help us defeat lung disease and lung cancer one step at a time. Let's give those with lung disease a fighting chance.
