I have dedicated my career to the treatment of patients and families affected by cancer. It is my passion to work with the people in the community to provide education, health promotion and risk reduction.
My primary role within Ascension is as a Nurse Practitioner in Radiation Oncology. I treat and support patients with all types of tumors, including lung cancer. Lung cancer is most often identified in late stage (III-IV) and therefore cure rates and 5 year survival rates are low.
A few years ago I dreamed of creating a public service or clinic in which I could reach people in the community to provide them assistance in lowering their lung cancer risk and to identify lung cancers at earlier and more treatable stages. I imagined providing tobacco cessation counseling, education and promotion of healthy habits, and encouragement to patients to follow through on appropriate cancer screenings. Ascension administration helped support and drive my dream into fruition.
I am excited to report that in 11/2018, I opened a Nurse Practitioner lead High Risk Lung Program within Ascension. Within this clinic I provide tobacco cessation counseling, lung cancer screening, and work up and managment of lung nodules found on CT scans. After about 9 months of the clinic being open, the patients are being referred regularly. And even better.... many are quitting smoking! yay!
My husband, Nick, our kids, and I will be walking in loving memory of Nick's cousin Andrea who was taken from us at a very early age from lung cancer. As well as my grandfather, who battled the lung diseases associated with smoking and struggled through multiple attempts at quitting smoking. We will also walk in support of my lovely second cousin, Mary, who is currently undergoing lung cancer treatment.
Almost everyone has a friend or family member affected by lung disease. Please support your loved ones and this cause!
Please consider joining me in this event to help raise awareness and funds to protect lung health. I'm really looking forward to this event and I greatly appreciate your support.
Your donation and participation, will help support the American Lung Association's research innovation, which leads to early detection for all and better treatments that give everyone a fighting chance.
