Interesting Fact: The American Lung Association was founded in 1904 to combat Tuberculosis (TB) - a deadly lung disease that was among the top three causes of death at that time. The funding, research, and work of the ALA was instrumental in developing a vaccine for TB. Over 100 years later, the world is fighting a new lung disease, COVID-19. In April 2020 the American Lung Association committed $25 million to end COVID-19 and defend against future respiratory virus pandemics.
Along with the COVID-19 Action Initiative, the Lung Association is continuing their work to eliminate lung cancer and other lung diseases such as COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and pneumonia. The ALA supports research, treatment, smoking cessation, education programs, and clean air initiatives with a goal of improving lung health and preventing lung disease.
Lung Cancer is the number 1 cancer related cause of death in both men and women in the US. In fact, each year more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Each year over 200,000 people in the US are diagnosed with lung cancer.
