LUNG FORCE Walk - Providence

The Breathsavers

Hello my friends and welcome to The Breathsavers Page.  This is the 2nd event we are participating in and continue to strive to be involved in more events.  Our team began with two of my daughters and myself and we participated in The Fight for Air Climb in Providence.  My family and I choose to participate in these events because lung disease has effected many of our family members.

The first time we have had an encounter with lung disease was with my Aunt Marie.  She was misdiagnosed with a deviated disc in her back.  It turned out to be stage 4 lung cancer.  She passed away May 30, 2001.  Not even a year later, my Aunt Marlene passed away of lung cancer on May 16, 2002.

Years later, we have had other encounters with lung disease, not lung cancer, however Sophie was diagnosed with cold and allergy induced asthma, which seems to be getting better as she gets older, however in her younger years it was rather difficult for her to fight of sickness.  Whether it was a simple cold or a GI bug, she would constantly end up with “The Seal” cough.  For myself, I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis back in 2014.  Currently it effects my lungs and skin.  (At least that we are aware of.)  I am rather fortunate that my symptoms of relatively mild.  There are so many people who aren’t as fortunate that suffer from this condition.

Lastly, and a highly important reason, I watched my amazing grandmother struggling to breathe in last few moments of her life and also witnessed her last breath.  This is something not easy to witness, and I can still hear those sounds of her fighting for air.  All I could do was sit and watch her, I felt completely helpless.

We are continuing to grow our team, because everyone has a story of someone they know who struggled with lung disease and it is easier to stand together and help raise awareness than to stand alone.  We are always looking for new members, if you would like to join our team and help raise awareness about lung disease, or even if you would like us to get involved in any other events you are hosting, feel free to contact me any time.
