Many of you know that I used in the past, but not sure why.
In October 2010 I started getting sick. I was in and out of the hospital with no clear diagnosis. The only thing the doctors agreed on was that I needed to be on oxygen 24/7. I went into
respiratory failure for two weeks in November/December. The prognosis was grim, but I pulled through!
Everyone was telling me what happened and I was in disbelief. They told me that I needed a double lung transplant and gave me a 6 month survival rate without one, but I continue to fight and prove them wrong. I was finally diagnosed in January 2011 with PVOD--Pulmonary Veno-Occlusive Disease and PAH--Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.
PVOD is characterized by the blockage of the blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the heart. A buildup of abnormal fibrous tissue forms in the small veins in the lungs, which narrows the vessels and impairs blood flow. Increased pressure in these vessels is known as Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. Because of the increased blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries, the heart must work harder than normal to pump blood to the lungs which can evenutally lead to fatal heart failure.
Most people with this disorder do not live more than 2 years after diagnosis, but more than 7 years later I have survived all of this and so much more! I was fortunate to receive a double lung transplant on April 29, 2016
