To those who donated to our first walk last year, thank you once again! With your support, the Lotus Ladies raised over $4200 for the LUNG FORCE! Not only did our team get national recognition, but it took something negative in our lives and helped inspire us to turn it into a positive.
LUNG FORCE is raising awareness and critical funds for lung cancer research, education, and advocacy efforts. Did you know that lung cancer is the #1 cancer that kills women? Anyone can get lung cancer, in fact, 2/3 of people diagnosed with lung cancer have never smoked, or are former smokers. More than 234,000 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year, but with your donations, hopefully we can reduce the number of fatalities through earlier screening, more research, and developing life saving treatments.
I am very proud to have joined this movement in honor of my mother who was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in September 2014. My mother is one of the strongest women I know. She has been through so many trials and tribulations in her life, yet never complains or has self pity. In 2014, she was complaining of hip pains and thought it was due to her two hour commute on the bus or simply getting older. She also did not want to make a big fuss and worry my father or me. Months later we realized the hip pain was from cancer. In September 2014, my mother, also my best friend in the world, was diagnosed with non-small cell Stage IV lung cancer. The cancer started in her lungs and traveled to her liver and hip. Within weeks, my mother who used to carry me as a child, walked in March of Dimes Marathons, and made twenty pound turkeys for Thanksgiving, was now frail and immobile.
After months of radiation and chemotherapy, prodding needles, and endless prayers, my mother's tumors were contained. Recently, her tumors have grown again, but we have tried a new medication and hope to slow the growth. Without funding these new innovative medications would not be possible! While it's been a challenging time, we feel so thankful for all your prayers, positivity, medical suggestions, help, thoughts and concerns. My mother and I love the word "hope," because without it, we have nothing. All of you have given us hope and we could not be more thankful.
We are named the Lotus Ladies because lotuses grow and bloom in the murkiest of waters.
