I am running in honor of my grandfather, Maurice Dean Melvin (Pop).
Pop passed away this year of unexpected lung cancer, but before he did he inspired many. My brother is named after him, Matthew Dean, because of my mom's admiration for her father Maurice Dean. He even had a part in naming me, after nick-naming my mom Marcy Darcy.
My all-time favorite memory was Pop calling me on his stroll through the grocery store. He was telling me about which cereal he planned to choose, and talking about coffee. I love the little things he'd do.
Pop is a two time veteran: Vietnam and Korea. He trained dogs. Something so unique.
One of my other favorite memories of Pop is his artistic abilities that he passed on to me. Pop made wood sculptures, and my grandma would paint them. He was a great illustration artist, always making me laugh with cartoons.
Pop told me ever since I was a child not to smoke, and I never have. Here I am today... running in his honor.
