LUNG FORCE Walk - Pittsburgh

wALKing with Mel

Thank you for visiting my LUNG FORCE team page. I formed this team to make a difference in the lives of people impacted by lung cancer and other lung diseases.

Anyone who has lungs can get lung cancer! Because of the stigma surrounding lung cancer and the misconception that only smokers get lung cancer, funding for lung cancer has been historically underfunded.

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer still causes more than 350 deaths each day, which is the highest number of deaths for all types of cancer—more than breast, prostate, and pancreatic cancers combined.

Although a new lung cancer screening guideline was published last year, preventative screening is still only available to patients with a smoking history.

Signs and symptoms of lung cancer, like coughing, shortness of breath, and feeling tired, are non-specific which makes diagnosis difficult, especially for patients without a smoking history.

I was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at the age of 35. Unfortunately, my story is more common than you may think. Because of research supported by organizations like the American Lung Association, I am still living a relatively healthy life.

Please help the American Lung Association support patients like me, and save lives by funding innovative research and early detection initiatives! You can help by joining my team, making a donation, or creating your own team.

I hope to walk with you on April 27th.

Thank you!
