I am joining thousands of other cyclists and the American Lung Association to raise money to fight lung disease and increase awareness about the importance of lung health.
Lung disease can take someone's breath away, leaving them unable to work, exercise or play.
Growing faster than almost any other major illness, lung disease, including lung cancer, asthma and emphysema is the third leading cause of death in the United States.
I am Catherine Corson, daughter, wife and mother, lover of fitness and biking. I live in North Haven, Maine. The Trek Across Maine happens over Father’s Day weekend which is pretty special for me, as I will be able to ride in memory of Doug Record, my step father.
I lost my step father to lung cancer, over the course of six days, in November 2018. After a grief soaked slumber, I woke up and made the decision to prioritize myself and my health. I did so by going on a retreat to Hilton Head Health in South Carolina.
They focus on health and wellness for your body and mind. They help bring you back to life. It was exactly what I needed. I knew after my second one week visit that I wanted more. In March 2022, I decided to do a four week immersive program and it changed my life. There really is no other way to say it.
I pushed my body in ways I had never had the courage to do before. I discovered that I really love cardio and the way it made me feel alive in my body. The thing that brought me the most joy was riding my bike on the beach. I knew, in that moment, that biking would be the thing that kept me active when I returned home. I set goals for the summer months to ensure daily movement. Running 50 miles in June, walking 100 miles in July and biking 500 miles in August. I achieved every goal I set and finally felt truly proud of myself. I find motivation in mileage and the Trek Across Maine checks all of my boxes.
I am doing the Trek not only to honor the memory of my step father and raise money for the American Lung Association, but to challenge myself and continue to choose my health and happiness as a priority. As I learned, whatever you’re not changing, you’re choosing.
Please join me in my efforts to make a difference by making a personal or corporate tax-deductible donation.
