I am riding the Trek Across Maine this year in honor of my dear friend Al Sheehy. Al is pictured on the left in this photo. Al was a teammate every time I have ridden the Trek. Sadly he passed away due to a lung disease called Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF). Idiopathic means that there is no known cause of this disease. Al was a very strong cyclist. It was shocking to witness how quickly this disease be debilitated him. So I am joining thousands of other cyclists and the American Lung Association to raise money to fight lung disease and increase awareness about the importance of lung health. Perhaps in a small way we will contribute to learning the cause of IPF.
Lung disease can take someone's breath away, leaving them unable to work, exercise or play. Growing faster than almost any other major illness, lung disease, including IPF, lung cancer, asthma and emphysema is the third leading cause of the death in the United States.
