Hi family, friends, coworkers,
2023... another year, another Trek Across Maine... my 14th year participating in this great event for a fantastic cause, The American Lung Association. As of last year the event was again live in Maine. And it occurs the traditional 3-days in June, Father's Day. As I write this, I am finding it hard to believe that I have been an "orphan" for almost 1.5 years, since my father's passing on 11/21/21. I was so grateful to have kept him in his home, which I bought in May last year. My bike lives here and it is where I do all my Trek training rides, from his driveway/this area.
The winter ski season was pretty sad for snow conditions... in the East that is. And the spring, thus far, has not been ideal cycling weather on the weekends. I am very behind on my training and will ultimately hope that years of riding this event (and PMC 12 years before that) will "hold me over" with experience of how to survive the 3 days (typically 60-70 miles per day).
Father's Day was never easy being away from my Dad, but his memory lives on. This ride's primary meaning is in my mother's memory, due to her many year battle with COPD... that she lost in May 2011. As we approach Mother's Day, realizing it has been 12 years, I miss her each and every day.
I try not to take things for granted... but being able to breathe without struggling is not something most of us ever think about. I do... certainly riding a bike 180 miles gives me a sense... I am blessed and thankful.
