Hi family, friends, coworkers,
2024... another year, another Trek Across Maine... my 15th year participating in this great event for a fantastic cause, The American Lung Association. Many people are "in the loop", but for those of you whom I've missed connecting with recently... I have a broken pelvis (3 fractures), which is the result for a ski crash (in a SG race) on 3/8 at Gore Mtn. No surgery was needed, and I am approaching the end of 12 weeks on crutches (as of 5/31). This was due to be a "big" year for me, as it is my 15th year and the 40th anniversary of the event.
To those who have been wondering... YES, I am "participating"! I will be volunteering on event weekend, which is Father's Day, 6/14-16. And as was the scenario for 2020 and 2021, my actual ride miles will be virtual. I am hoping for and planning for the Sept-Oct timeframe. I am a traditionalist and would have liked to do a virtual "Trek weekend". Although out of an abundance of care, after this lengthy recovery, it will be a culmination of multiple shorter rides from Dad's house (aka my house) in Sunderland.
Father's Day was never easy being away from my Dad, but his memory lives on. And yet, this ride's primary meaning for me personally is in my mother's memory, due to her many year battle with COPD... that she lost in May 2011. I can't believe it has been 13 years and I miss her every day.
I try not to take things for granted... being able to breathe without struggling is not something most of us ever think about. I do... certainly riding a bike 180 miles (even if over multiple days) gives me a sense... I am truly blessed and forever thankful.
I am continuing with my fundraising... And I ask you all to consider supporting me again... donations of ANY amount are welcome. My favorite number is 7... My 2024 goal is $10,077. I will donate 3 days of my "free" time in June and am honored to do so. It is always such a fantastic event and fun time! And then I will devote the time needed to bike 180 miles in the fall.
Please remember that your employer may offer a matching gift program for your donation! Be sure to choose the American Lung Association (Tax ID/EIN: 13-1632524, 55 W. Wacker Drive, Suite 1150, Chicago, IL 60601) for the matching gift and remember to include my name and Trekker #524.
With best wishes and gratitude,
Patti
