As a volunteer, I am supporting thousands of cyclists including my sister-in-law & brother-in-law who are riding for their second year and the American Lung Association to raise money to fight lung disease and increase awareness about the importance of lung health.
Lung disease can take someone's breath away, leaving them unable to work, exercise or play. Growing faster than almost any other major illness, lung disease, including lung cancer, asthma and emphysema is the third leading cause of the death in the United States.
Lung cancer recently took my mother Susan Johnson's life on January 1, 2020. She was just diagnosed in October 2019 and lost her very short battle with this disease. Doctors discovered a spot the size of a grape on her lung that was thought to be Stage 1 and found early. Doctors were "confident" that the spot could be removed and she would be cured. Unfortunately this wasn't the case. When going in for surgery it was found that the cancer had spread to other parts of her body and her cancer had changed to Stage 4, just like that. She was only able to undergo one chemo treatment and ten days of radiation. Her cancer was too progressive and none of the treatments made any difference. If only we knew earlier that something was wrong maybe we could of prevented this terrible disease from spreading so quickly throughout her body and taking her life at such a young age.
My mother Susan was only 61 years old. She has 7 grandchildren who love her very much. She is going to be missed dearly. She is a smart, caring, strong, beautiful person and has always put others first. She will always tell you like it is and won't take shit from anyone. I only hope I can be as strong and bad ass as her someday.
I'm doing this, not only for my mother but for other loved ones who have been diagnosed with lung cancer and are now in remission. And for my 3 year old son who has asthma.
