Healthy air and healthy lungs are amazing gifts. We should all be so fortunate.
I have asthma. I've never been a smoker. I now know that the "seal cough" that followed me throughout my childhood was an asthmatic symptom. My younger brother and sister had even more severe asthma -- and still struggle with it as adults. Mine got progressively worse the older I got -- first showing up when I'd play sports, and occasionally being triggered by environmental factors (a strong perfume, pollens, glass of red wine). Nebulizers were a familiar sight in our house.
As an adult -- meds help me manage my symptoms, as does being VERY proactive when cold and flu season hit. I'm also nearing the end of a course of allergy shots, which, along with an allergy med called singulair, have been game changers for me. The advancements in testing that help hone in on what a person's triggers are, and advancements in medicinces have helped. An example? One type of inhaler makes me shake terribly. Others don't. These small adjustments make managing the disease so much easier.
Staying in shape helps, too. So the ride is a double win for me -- raising awareness and a chance to get in motion.
