Since 2018 I have been part of the American Lung Association's Reach the Beach Ride. I will be riding with members of my family. At least two generations will participate as Team Lefohn. Each year, beginning in February or March (depending upon the weather), I enjoy training in Montana to prepare for the ride (in the state of Washington) in late September. Each year, I set a training goal of riding 1200 miles prior to the Reach the Beach ride. Each year I have met that goal. During the summer, it is such a joy to get up early in the cool morning and take those long rides prior to the afternoon temperatures in the 90s. Montana is such a great place to cycle!
Why do I ride? I ride to represent all those who suffer from lung disease, especially those who are close to my heart. Second, I believe in the American Lung Association's mission. The American Lung Association works to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy. Their work is focused on four strategic goals: to defeat lung cancer; champion clean air for all; improve the quality of life for those with lung disease and their families; and create a tobacco-free future.
For almost 25 years, since its inception, I have contributed to the American Lung Association's annual State of the Air Report as a research scientist who analyzes the nation's smog (ozone) and soot (particulate matter) air quality for the ALA report. As the years go by, Climate Change is becoming more and more important as a contributor to the levels of smog and soot that are measured in the United States. Each year, the association's report summarizes the Nation's air quality county by county and is followed closely by the public, policymakers, the Executive Branch of government, the US Congress, and worldwide press. The American Lung Association has been and remains an important part of my life. I am excited that my efforts contribute to the Association's goals. If you would like to contribute on my behalf or Team Lefohn's behalf to the American Lung Association, I would appreciate it. Your contribution helps the American Lung Association implement its very important goals.
