I am joining thousands of other cyclists and the American Lung Association to raise money to fight lung disease and increase awareness about the importance of lung health.
Lung disease can take someone's breath away, leaving them unable to work, exercise or play. Growing faster than almost any other major illness, lung disease, including lung cancer, asthma and emphysema is the third leading cause of the death in the United States.
This will be my 18th year riding for the American Lung. I ride for my parents who have passed on due to lung disease, other family members who have passed and I was born with asthma. This year I am adding another reason why I ride...Covid 19. My husband and i both were exposed to Covid 19 and both became sick. We tested, was positive and did the quarentine.
Dealing with asthma issues and catching Covid 19 really impacted our ability to assist with daily routines. I had been training for the Cycle for air bike ride which we do in Alaska, and I had no energy, appetite, or mental stamina. When I was able to start training again it was difficult. My lung capacity had changed and I had to start using my inhaler quite a bit more. This was very frustrating. I still have days where I feel like I have hit a brick wall with no energy and using my inhaler more then I have ever had to.
I've always rode the 100 mile distance since the American Lung has had that option. My goal this year is to ride the whole 100 miles and I hope on the day of our ride I feel up to it. I ride for my family, friends, and others who have passed or have lung disease.
