On May 16-19 I hope to again participate in the American Lung Association's 100 mile bike trek down the Greenbrier River Trail. This is the 32nd year for this event which is the association's main fundraiser in West Virginia. It also marks three years that I have shown no recurrence of my cancer. No one wants to have cancer but my experience certainly teaches me what it feels like to "fight for air" not to mention, for one's life. My parents and many of my patients have not had as fortunate an outcome as I have.
The American Lung Association supports tobacco education, smoking cessation, and research related to lung cancer, COPD, asthma, and occupational lung disease. Lung cancer remains the number one cause of cancer deaths in spite of the declines in smoking rates over the past 40-50 years. New concerns are now rising related to alarming increases in vaping among teens. Although this initially avoids tobacco, the nicotine is addictive and reportedly 30% who vape start smoking in six months. Also of concern is the recent increase in worldwide rates of tuberculosis which is accompanied by an increase in resistance to anti-tuberculosis drugs. Then there is also the potential problem side of smoking marijuana which contains approximately twice the carcinogens of tobacco smoke. The fight goes on!
