During this community learning session, national and local renowned researchers will discuss the long-term effects of COVID-19 and post-acute care, in particular as it has affected Hawaii residents. Healthcare providers, public health professionals, and the general public are invited to attend to hear the latest trends on COVID-19 long-haulers and post-acute care.

  • Albert Rizzo, M.D.,
    Chief Medical Officer, American Lung Association
    As Chief Medical Officer for the American Lung Association, is the organization's senior medical authority. Dr. Rizzo has long been a key medical advisor to the American Lung Association, a member of the Lung Cancer Expert Medical Advisory Panel and a leading media spokesperson for the Association.
  • Alika Maunakea, PhD,
    Associate Professor - Epigenomics Research Program, John A. Burns School of Medicine
    Having established several locally and nationally funded community-based research studies on health disparities, Dr. Maunakea is co-leading a multidisciplinary team to mitigate the adverse impacts of COVID-19 as part of the Pacific Alliance Against COVID-19 (PAAC). 
  • Josh Green, M.D.
    Hawaii Lt. Governor
    Dr. Green's career started as a family and emergency room physician in rural hospitals and clinics on Hawaii island. After serving in the State House of Representatives and the Hawaii State Senate, he was elected as Hawaii’s 14th lieutenant governor in 2018. With the onset of the COVID-19 Pandemic in 2020, Dr. Green was named as the state’s COVID-19 liaison and has been a leader in helping curb the spread of coronavirus in Hawaii.
  • Philip Verhoef, M.D.
    Dr. Verhoef is a physician-scientist who divides his time between caring for patients in the pediatric and adult intensive care units at Kaiser Foundation Hospital and Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women and Children, serving as associate program director for the Kaiser Permanente Hawaii Internal Medicine Residency, and conducting research with CIHR. He also has an appointment as a clinical assistant professor of Medicine at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine.
  • Jeanelle Ahuna, PA-C, AAHIV-S
    Assistant Medical Director, Waikiki Health
    Helping lead Waikiki Health's, a federally qualified Health Center on Oahu, COVID-19's response, Jeanelle has worked with some of Hawaii's most vulnerable populations. She joined Waikiki Health care team in 2008 and also provides Primary Medical Care to the agency's growing number of patients. 
  • Lee-Jacob “Coby” Torda
    COVID-19 Survivor
    Waikiki Bartender, Coby Torda, spent 69 days in the hospital being treated for COVID-19 after his symptoms began on March 9, 2020. He was on a ventilator, intubated in the ICU fighting for his life. It has been a long road to recovery for the 38-year-old and he is still battling respiratory problems, but he has a great outlook on life.
