Please join our efforts to increase lung cancer screening through the Cancer Moonshot Initiative.

President Joe Biden reignited the Cancer Moonshot Initiative earlier this year with the following goals: to reduce the death rate from cancer by at least 50 percent over the next 25 years, and improve the experience of people and their families living with and surviving cancer— and, by doing this and more, end cancer as we know it today.

The Cancer Moonshot Initiative is an important opportunity for our efforts to defeat lung cancer, including improving early detection by increasing lung cancer screening rates. Please email President Biden to thank him for his leadership on the Cancer Moonshot Initiative and urge him to work to increase lung cancer screening for individuals at high risk.

Support Lung Cancer Screening Through the Cancer Moonshot?

Thank you for your leadership on the Cancer Moonshot Initiative and your efforts to end cancer as we know it today. As part of these efforts, I urge you to continue to work to increase lung cancer screening for individuals at high risk.

I strongly support your call to action on cancer screening, issued in February 2022. The American Lung Association's 2022 State of Lung Cancer report found that only 26% of lung cancer cases nationally are diagnosed at an early stage when the five-year survival rate is much higher (61%). Unfortunately, 44% of cases are not caught until a late stage when the survival rate is only 7%. People of color are less likely to be diagnosed early. Bold action is needed to improve early detection and eliminate disparities in lung cancer.

Thankfully, lung cancer screening among those at high risk can help detect this disease earlier and has been shown to reduce the lung cancer death rate by up to 20%. In March 2021, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) updated its recommendation for lung cancer screening for individuals at high risk to include people ages 50 to 80 years who have a 20 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. This recommendation will nearly double the number of individuals eligible for screening and has the potential to save significantly more lives than the previous guidelines, especially among women and Black Americans.

To increase access to lung cancer screening for individuals at high risk, I urge you to make robust investments in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's cancer control programs, as well as in cancer screening research through the National Institutes of Health. And I urge to continue to expand access to quality, affordable healthcare, including no-cost screenings available to everyone at high risk for lung cancer.
