Tell Congress to Take Action to Save Lives from Lung Cancer

During our annual LUNG FORCE Advocacy Day (April 6, 2022), lung cancer advocates from across the nation will join together to meet virtually with their members of Congress, asking them to support $49 billion in funding for NIH, $11 billion in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and to make quality healthcare more affordable for millions of Americans by making the expanded premium tax credits permanent.

The lung cancer survival rate has dramatically increased by 33% over the past ten years thanks in part to treatment advances, increased access to care and more people at high risk for lung cancer being screened. We need your support to do even more to increase survival rates.

I am writing to you today to ask you to take action to ensure people with lung cancer have the best chance to survive.

The lung cancer survival rate has dramatically increased by 33% over the past ten years thanks in part to treatment advances, increased access to care and more people at high risk for lung cancer being screened. But despite this progress, the disease remains the leading cancer killer of women and men in the U.S.

I ask that you make quality healthcare more affordable for millions of Americans by making the expanded premium tax credits permanent. New treatments must go hand in hand with access to quality and affordable healthcare. If they do not, the treatments will not be accessible to patients.

I also ask that you support $49 billion in funding for the National Institutes of Health so there can be better early detection, treatments and cures for lung cancer and $11 billion in funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to rebuild healthier communities and protect our nation's health from disease, including lung cancer.

In 2022 alone, it is estimated that over 235,000 people in the U.S. will diagnosed with lung cancer and over 130,000 will succumb to the disease.

More must be done to save lives. Americans who are diagnosed with lung cancer need new treatments that result from NIH investment  as well as quality, affordable healthcare in order to ensure that they can access these treatments to treat their disease. They also need healthier communities and an increased national effort on prevention, including screening individuals at high risk for lung cancer.
