Ellen Marie Vinzant Grubbs was an energetic, smart, funny, caring, athletic, independent woman, but she died at age 49 after complications from asthma and the flu.

Ellen had asthma her whole life, but that didn't stop her from being a champion swimmer, having two sweet, responsible kids and rescuing a slew of dogs. She loved water parks, the Ohio State Fair, country music and debating politics. As a teenager, she went to Maine East, managed the Fannie Mae and hung out at Rand Pool. Her son Rusty was her dueling partner in debates. Ellen made sure to create mother-daughter days with Caiti and to round the family up for game days to keep everyone close.

She was the type not to let on that anything was wrong. Argue, yes. Complain, never.

Defying doctors' odds was her hobby. But every once in a while asthma would jump up and bite her, like it did the night of January 31.

Ellen Marie Vinzant Grubbs, passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, OH, after a little more than a week in a coma.
Russ kept a vigil at the hospital throughout the ordeal. Ellen, a constant blood donor in life, was an organ donor.

A wake was held at Evans Funeral Home, 4171 E. Livingston Ave., Columbus, OH, and a Funeral mass was Tuesday Feb. 16 at Ellen's church, Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 4383 E. Broad St., Columbus, OH, by Father William Arnold. She was buried at Sunset Cemetery. Another memorial mass will be held Saturday February 27 at 8.30AM at St. Mary's in Des Plaines, IL.
