Less than 2 weeks before the 2017 Caesar Rodney Half Marathon and 5k, I started the team "Dashing for David" to raise awareness and funds for lung cancer research, provide education and advocacy efforts.
My father, David, was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma earlier this winter. He is a non-smoker, avid tennis player who, up until recently, lived here in Delaware, but now resides in Texas. He is currently down in the third set of his "match" against lung cancer, but he is a fighter and I believe he will win in the fifth set.
Forming a team allowed us to show support of David's fight against lung cancer while raising funds for an important cause.
Our 5k “Dashing for David” team was small, but mighty-much like David, if I dare say. Sue Thomas, Jessica and Charlene Sun, Robear Wolk, Stephanie and Eric Alsop, Mija Song, Brandon O’Neil, Rich and Lynn McCarthy, James Tang, Charlie Wang, and Nancy Malatesta joined the over 800 other participants at the American Lung Association Caeser Rodney Half Marathon and 5k. We also had 2 virtual 5k team members, Jason and Christine Morris, who "Dashed for David" from San Francisco.
Imagine my surprise and pride to learn that our little “Dashing for David” team had eeked out a top fundraiser win late in the “match” (sound like a familiar story?).
I am hopeful that next year, David will be able to join us in DE for the 2018 Caesar Rodney 5k.
