Volunteer for Rides Right BorderWe recognize that not everyone wants to be on a bike, but we know everyone wants to help. Our Reach the Beach volunteers are vital to the success of the event. The riders pedal and you make that possible. Our volunteers have playeda vital role for the American Lung Association in Oregon since its founding and we are grateful. Thank you for your support!

Reach the Beach is the American Lung Association in Oregon's largest fundraising event of the year and we depend on the talent and time of volunteers like you to make it a success.

We need over 400 volunteers to ensure a great event. All volunteers will receive:

  • Volunteer Shirt
  • Entry into the Finish Line Party with a free meal
  • HUGE debt of gratitude from the American Lung Association in Oregon

How to register as a volunteer

  • Choose a volunteer positions from the list below
    • Clicking on the REGISTER tab at the top of this page, then click on the Volunteer option.
    • Downloading the mail-in Volunteer Form, filling it out and mailing to us by May 4th.
    • Downloading the mail-in Volunteer Form, filing it out and bringing it with you when you volunteer.

VOLUNTEER POSITIONS

Please look at the descriptions below to find the perfect volunteer job for you.  There are great activities for all interests, skills, locations and times.  Most duties only take an average of three hours to make a big difference in the lives of Oregonians with lung disease.

PRE-EVENT VOLUNTEERING - VARIOUS DATES

Rider Bib Prep – 8 volunteers needed

Pacific City Finish Line Party – 60 volunteers needed

Details: Cheer riders to the finish line, serve dinner, sell merchandise, help clean up and more

Truck Driver – 10 volunteers needed

Place: Portland to Pacific City

Times: All day

Details: Drive a large moving truck from Portland to Pacific City and back again.  These trucks are used to transport rider bikes back to their start locations

Gold Wing Volunteer RiderMotorcycle Escort – 6 volunteers needed

Place: Portland to Pacific City

Times: All day

Details: Provide on-course support across the entire route, helping riders when they most need it

Ride Along Mechanics – 20 volunteers needed*

Place: All starts: Portland, Newberg, Amity and Grand Ronde

Times: All day – times go with location start times

Details: Ride the course and help any riders that need mechanical help.  Ride for free!  Mechanics will have a staggered start and will help with at the start line before they leave.

*Required: Roving mechanics must have advanced mechanical skills and be able to do on-the-spot basic repair.  Mechanics bring their own basic tool kit, a cell phone and are proactive about providing support on the route. We will provide a mechanic vest for you to wear on the route so you are recognized as a mechanic.

Medical Riders – 20 volunteers needed*

Place: All starts: Portland, Newberg, Amity and Grand Ronde

All day – times go with location start times

Details: Ride the course and help any riders that need medical help.  Ride for free!  Medics will have a staggered start and will help with at the start line before they leave.

*Required: To sign up for this position, you must be a MD, RN or EMT and provide your own ride-along medical kit and cell phone.

POST-EVENT VOLUNTEERING

Truck Unloading – 4 volunteers needed

Place: TBA

Date: Monday, May 21st; 9:00am-12:00pm

Details: Help finish the event by unloading the supplies and putting them in storage
