What is Reach The Summit ?
Reach The Summit is a mountaineering training and fundraising program benefiting the American Lung Association. Participants train to successfully summit a mountain of their choice (Mt. Rainier, Mt. Hood or Mt. Adams) while they raise awareness of American Lung Association's programs and activities through their individual fundraising campaigns. Reach The Summit is a once in a lifetime experience for the team members who join. The American Lung Association provides training, lodging, guides and technical equipment for the climb itself.
How do I register online?
Go to the Reach The Summit Home page. At the top of the page choose the Registration option, then click on the Sign Up To Climb link and choose your mountain. You will now be guided through the registration process. Once the transaction is complete, you will receive a confirmation email receipt.
What is unique about this website?
This website is so unique because it offers the capability for individuals to not only register for the event, but also to collect donations from their friends and family through a much more efficient mechanism. Each climber can track the progress of donations collected through viewing secured online reports.
When you register for Reach The Summit you will have a personal web page created for you. A place where friends may go and sponsor your climb through a donation. The password you create when registering will allow you to go in and make changes to your web page.
What do I need my own webpage for?
Your web page will:
Show your current fundraising total.
Have an email function that will allow you to invite people to donate towards your fundraising efforts.
Provide a report area that will allow you to keep track of the donations you receive.
When you send an email to your family and friends asking for a donation, all the family and friends have to do is click on the link at the bottom of the page (under "Login to visit my personal web...") to end up at your personal web page, then they will only need to fill in the amount that they want to give, as well as any required information that is needed to process their gift. They will also receive a receipt emailed to them once the gift has been processed.
How do I personalize my web page?
You may personalize your page by clicking on the "My Webpage" tab. Your page may be personalized by adding a photo to replace the one that is there and/or by adding/changing the text. To change the picture simply click on the "select" link to choose a picture from our graphics library or click on the "upload" link to upload a photo (in jpeg format and less than 150 Kb) from your hard drive. To change the text just type in any or all of the four text boxes provided (you may use html coding in the text boxes if you know it) under the "My Webpage" tab.
Can I create my own website address?
Yes, during the registration process you will be asked to enter the address you want for your website. If you don't choose to enter one, the system will create a long address for you. This website address will take you to your personal web page. This address link is automatically included in any emails that are sent through the email center in event headquarters after you have logged into the website. You can also copy and paste this link into any other form of email.
I forgot my Username and Password. How can I find out what they are?
Remember that your username and password are case sensitive. To have either one emailed to you, go to the Reach The Summit home page and on the top right of the page, click on the "Login" link. You will now be able to see the link, Forgot Username or Password. Just click on that link and follow the directions.
Is my information secure?
Yes. Convio has made every effort to protect your information. We use industry-standard SSL encryption techniques to make sure that your credit card information, passwords, and personal information travel securely over the Internet. We have also installed an encryption engine on our database server so that your data is securely stored.
Why is the "Donate" search not finding a Climber that I know has registered?
You must type in the first name or last name of the Climber exactly how it is spelled. It is not case sensitive. If you have a problem locating a Climber that you are sure has registered, please contact Clara by emailing her at Clara.Foleen@Lung.org or calling her at 503-718-6149 for help.
I've never raised this much money before. Does the Lung Association provide information or tips on fundraising?
The average climber raises well over the minimum - even those who have never done fundraising before! The American Lung Association (ALA) has sample letters from successful climbers' fundraising campaigns for you to modify to fit your needs. The professional fundraising staff at the ALA is always available to answer questions and to help you plan your Reach The Summit campaign. Can friends and family make a donation to a Climber by going through the main website?
Yes, on the home page of the website, friends and family may locate a Climber by clicking on the "Donate" button, then typing in the name of the Climber, they will be directed to the Climber's personalized donation page.
What do I do with the donations I collect?
You will need to send in your donations along with the Climber Donation Collection form (make sure to put your name at the top so we know whose account to credit).
Remember to always keep a record of your donors and the amount they have donated so if there is a discrepancy with our records we know where to start looking for the error.
Can I ask my company or other corporations to sponsor me?
Yes, some companies will sponsor an employee for the entire fee; others will match your fundraising effort; while others will partially sponsor you if you have established a business relationship. It is advised to ask for fundraising early in their business year. Most companies plan their budget between October and December for the following calendar year.
Is a portion of the registration fee a donation?
No, although the registration fee will count towards your fundraising goal.
How can I see who has donated to me?
Click on the Login button on top right corner of the home page of the event. Use the Username and Password that you created when you registered your participant center. There will be a list of donors there. You may also view your personal web page. This page shows your current fundraising account balance and who has donated to you. It does sometimes take us up to a week to process checks you send in, but if your account balance doesn't look right to you, be sure to call and ask about it. Also, when an online donation is made in your name, you will receive an email from us telling you the name of the donor.
Who is the American Lung Association?
The American Lung Association is the oldest voluntary health agency in the nation. We began a century ago working for cures for tuberculosis. Today we are dedicated to preventing and curing lung disease and promoting lung health through research, advocacy and statewide services for those with asthma and other lung disease.
How many people are affected by lung disease?
More than 30 million Americans suffer from chronic lung disease, an estimated 500,000 here in the state of Oregon. Asthma alone affects 74,000 children in Oregon; it affects more children than any other chronic disease. Every day in this country, 11 people die from severe asthma attacks. Few know that lung cancer is the most common cancer related death; taking more lives than breast, colon and prostate cancer combined. But we don't just help people with lung disease.
Who does the money raised support?
Money raised will be directed to so the American Lung Association of the Mountain Pacific, which serves Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Washington, Wyoming and Hawaii to provide local programming, fund national research initiatives, prevent lung disease and promote lung health.
How does the American Lung Association utilize the contributions?
Funds raised from Reach The Summit go directly to lung disease research and programs of the American Lung Association. These funds enable us to provide asthma education programs to hundreds of elementary school children statewide, fund teen and adult smoking cessation programs, provide support groups to adults with lung disease, advocate for stronger laws to protect lung health, and support research and education for cures and better treatment of lung cancer and other lung diseases.
