2014 Asthma Educator Institute, Williston, VT

The American Lung Association developed the Asthma Educator Institute (AEI), a two-day preparatory course for the National Asthma Education Certification Board (NAECB) exam or for healthcare professionals to advance their knowledge in asthma treatment. The curriculum reflects the detailed content outline delineated in the NAECB Certified Asthma Educator candidate book (see www.naecb.org for details). AEI includes hands-on skills, demonstrations, and practice as well as evaluation tests to measure increase in knowledge and skills.

The institute will include current knowledge about asthma, with emphasis on techniques and skills in delivering education to individuals and families with asthma.

Application has been made to the American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) for continuing education contact hours for Respiratory Therapists.

COURSE OBJECTIVES & AGENDA

The overall course objectives are:

  • Analyze the components of asthma education: lung pathophysiology, assessment of physical status, environmental factors, barriers to adherence and pharmacological interventions
  • Design asthma management and education plans for individuals in a variety of situations
  • Teach individuals how to manage their asthma using appropriate medications, devices and techniques
  • Pursue national certification through NAECB

Who Should Attend? Respiratory therapists, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals who are preparing for the NAECB exam or want to advance their knowledge in asthma treatment. Please refer to NAECB.org to determine the eligibility to become an AE-C.

The scheduled topics for the seminar are as follows:

  • Asthma Overview: Definition, pathophysiology and role of inflammation
  • Factors Contributing to Asthma Exacerbations: Allergens, irritants, and environmental factors
  • Patient history and physical assessment
  • Case studies using spirometry
  • Pharmacologic management of asthma
  • Barriers to adherence and compliance
  • Asthma Action Plan: Management plan development
  • Your role as an asthma educator
  • NAECB preparation

 


 

Cost: $250 includes two-days of training, all materials, and meals.
