The American Lung Association in Minnesota's COPD Educator Institute provides healthcare professionals with a thorough overview of COPD information. The course will include practical information healthcare providers can use in their work with COPD patients. Specific attention will be given to smoking cessation, spirometry, COPD management, medication guidelines, end of life issues, pulmonary rehabilitation, oxygen therapy and patient education.

The following healthcare providers are highly recommended to take this course:
Respiratory therapists, internal medicine nurses, pulmonary nurses, pharmacists and care managers

Course Objectives:
After the program the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize that COPD is preventable and treatable and increasing in prevalence.
  • Recognize COPD risk factors and prevention strategies including smoking cessation.
  • Distinguish the role of spirometry testing for the identification and management of COPD.
  • Review risk factors and discuss interventions to reduce COPD readmissions.
  • Describe current evidence-based guidelines to improve the care of COPD patients.
  • Understand principles for selection of appropriate oxygen therapy devices.
  • Understand the role of palliative care and hospice for COPD patients.
  • Demonstrate proper technique for medication delivery devices.
  • Explain how pulmonary rehabilitation and self-management skills can improve quality of life for a COPD patient.
  • Utilize shared decision making and engagement strategies to help patients improve medication adherence, reduce health care burden, and be active in their healthcare.
