Team 27 has been the #1 fundraising team in the Nation for the American Lung Association Fight For Air Climb for the past four years. Tom's sons, Jeff and Jason, formed Team 27 in recognition of their dad. The name, Team 27, originated because Tom suffered with his lung disease for 27 years; he was the 27th recipient of a lung transplant from the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics; and his transplant was on June 27th, 2009. Over the past six years, Team 27 has raised over $175,000 for the ALA in Iowa to help with their mission, "to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through advocacy, research and education". Team 27's motto is, "Every Breath Is a Gift".
We climb for Susan Warmerdam, our team captain and Citadel employee, fighting her own battle against stage 4 lung cancer since 2012. Doctors told Susan, who has never smoked, that her condition was inoperable and incurable. She fought to be a miracle patient - completely changed her diet, responded well to chemo, had three surgeries and is currently off all treatment. We are honored to have Susan on our team and proud to support her and all those battling cancer at the Fight for Air Climbs!
